World No Tobacco Day 2010

The Indian Dental Association (IDA) in partnership with Mumbai’s first citizen Mayor Shraddha Jadhav today launched its campaign to make Mumbai a smoke-free city. Since its inception, the IDA has been tirelessly campaigning for a ban on tobacco usage because tobacco impacts oral health causing many oral diseases and adverse oral conditions. This year, Mumbai Mayor Ms. Shraddha Jadhav has joined the fight against the epidemic of tobacco usage which is one of the greatest threats to global health. Approximately one-third of the adult population in the world uses tobacco in some form and half of this number will die prematurely. Speaking at the rally, Ms. Shraddhha Jadhav said, “Though tobacco is the number one preventable cause of disability and death, yet many Indian men and women fall prey to this vice. Through this campaign, we hope to change the attitude and thinking of people towards tobacco with the aim of making Mumbai and Mumbaikars healthy.” The World No Tobacco Day rally organised by IDA started from the Mayor’s Bungalow at Shivaji Park, Dadar. Apart from IDA members, students and the general public also participated in the rally to express their solidarity with the campaign.
